The nation’s unemployment snapshot, due out Friday, is likely to show that the biggest cause of joblessness is simply the weak economy. There is one bright spot in the job world today… Groupon.com. This is the company that offers deals to consumers in local markets in conjunction with local merchants. The catch is that the deal is only valid if a certain number of consumers take up the offer.

This works for all parties because a merchant doesn’t have to offer the deal unless he/she receives enough sales volume to make it worth it. And since it will be worth it to the merchant, consumers that take the offer get the best possible deal available.

It is said that Groupon turned down a six-billion dollar purchase offer from Google recently. Since that time, they have received over 900-million dollars in venture capital and they are using some of that money to hire local sales and business development talent.

You can apply here:

This website offers a fantastic idea to both job seekers and employers. The story is that the creator was laid off twice in 2008 and then decided that the best way for her to find a job was to “give back” and to show potential employers what she was capable of.

Rather than just attending interviews, she offered to work for a short period of time for free to employers who were looking for employees and in the process created Give Back Get Hired.

In many ways the site is like ours, helping both job seekers and employers but offer job seekers and employers the ability to work together for a short time in an effort to prove themselves to each other with no further obligation.

We think it is a great idea. Check out the video below. The web site has more information.

We have been made aware of job posters who are most often disguised as “Mystery Shoppers” or “Secret Shoppers” programs.

The way the scam works is like this… Con artists post jobs on job classified web sites asking for applicants to send them information. Most often, they don’t include any real, verifiable company information or addresses. They often do not include contact phone numbers. Rather, they like to work with applicants via email.

The idea is to make eager applicants give them information and then to hire them and send them a check with instructions to cash the check and then wire money (less their “pay”) to an entity usually out of the country. Victims are then asked to fill in a survey and evaluate the service of the money wiring service.

Banks are happy to cash these checks because they can look very real but what happens is that after a victim wires the money to the out-of-country entity, the original check from the “company” bounces and the money wired out of the country is lost by the person who does it. Once you sign a check and cash it at your bank, you are responsible for that check being good. You are in essence, vouching for the check writer.

There are legitimate mystery shopping services out there, but right now (2009) we recommend being very suspicious of any job advertising for mystery shoppers. Here are some clues that should cause you to be suspicious and some ideas on how to avoid being ripped off:

Be suspicious…

If the job poster only lists an email address for contact.

If you are cannot verify the name, address, or phone number of the company.

If you are asked to send money or cash checks for any company during the interview process.

Things to do to avoid being ripped off while looking for a job…

Always do a Google search on any company where you are applying

Call the company independently using a phone number that you found through your own search because some of these con artists will actually use the name of legitimate companies and tell you they are the hiring managers when in fact, the company is not hiring and they do not work for the company.

Do not send potential employers money and if asked to, verify that it is legitimate

Check this web site: ScamVictimsUnited to see if any patterns are ocurring that look suspicious. You have to keep up with these con artists because they change their methods often before authorities can warn the public.

To Con Artists Who Try to Post These Ads Here…

We have seen some of these ads placed on our site. If we become suspicious that you are playing this game, we will delete your ad first and ask questions later; no refunds.

To Legitimate “Mystery Shopper” Companies

We are happy to have you advertise with us but we must ask that you include your full company information with your ads so that our job seekers can verify that you are a legitimate company. We are sure that you agree this is in the best interest of all involved (including your company).

Job Reports That Give the Whole Story

Each week, the Department of Labor puts out a report called the Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report. This seasonally adjusted data gauges the health of the job market in the United States. Of course, when there are a higher number of claims for unemployment, that indicates that the jobless rate may be increasing and when the number of claims for unemployment decrease, that indicates that the health of the job market in the United States is improving.

The most current report and much more can be seen here…

Weekly Jobless Claims…

The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts out a Monthly Unemployment Report. Each month the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program surveys about 150,000 businesses and government agencies, representing approximately 390,000 individual worksites, in order to provide detailed industry data on employment, hours, and earnings of workers on nonfarm payrolls.

The latest information on this report can be found here…

Job Interview success comes from preparing thoroughly, understanding the interview process, anticipating the interview questions, preparing winning answers and utilizing powerful interviewing techniques to give an excellent performance. Here is a selection of the top five most serious mistakes and errors that cost job offers. Spend time reviewing them so they don’t happen to you!

1. Not Researching The Company You’re Interviewing With: Learning about the company you’re interviewing with is more than just flipping over their website and memorizing a few key facts that you can blurt out during the interview. Not knowing very much about the company can quickly make the interviewer or interviewers feel that you’re not really interested in the job or working for the company.

2. Not asking questions: Recruitment managers agree that not asking questions is the most unforgivable behavior exhibited in job interviews. Asking thoughtful and intelligent questions will demonstrate to interviewers that you are an insightful person with initiative and real enthusiasm for the company. Conversely, having no questions prepared sends the message that you lack initiative or ideas, and the interviewer may question whether you have a genuine desire to work for the company.

3. Criticizing your previous employer: Always answer any interview question in a positive way. Avoid criticizing your previous job, employer or manager. Criticizing a former employer during a job interview indicates a serious attitude problem. It also sends a message that you will be criticizing the employer you are applying to work with at some point in the future.

4. Not making eye contact: Not many people realize how important eye contact is. Body language is a very important part of any communication, and will be analyzed by the interviewer. Without any eye contact, the interviewer will feel remote from you and is unlikely to relate you, or what you are saying in any meaningful way regardless of how well you’ve answered the question.

5. Not properly answering the question you’re asked: Not listening to the questions being asked or simply giving a rambling answer that that doesn’t actually address the question is due to a failure to anticipate the questions you might be asked.

Goal setting is important in any area of life where you want success, and this includes career change planning.

Setting Goals Motivates

There are people who will avoid setting goals because either they think they can never achieve what they really want, or because they think they are no good at setting goals. The truth is that neither of these is true. Anyone is capable of achieving what they want, as long as they have the physical capacity, and anyone can learn how to set achievable goals. If it has not worked for you in the past, that may be because your goals have been unclear or unrealistic. Or perhaps they were just not motivating enough.

If your goals are not motivating, it is going to be difficult to keep to your game plan. Your goals should get you out of bed very morning and keep you determined to overcome any obstacles to achieve them.

It is wise to remember that goals can be flexible; if your goal is not working out, and you have given it enough time and done everything on your plan, it may be that it just needs tweaking.

Some people may give up on a goal because their actions are not producing the results that they wanted. This does not mean that your goal is unachievable, or you are not able to do it; it just means is that you need to adjust your actions. Creating smaller, easily achievable goals within a shorter time span can give you greater confidence to go for the larger goal.

Before setting your goals, you need to take a good look at where you are right now. No-one plans a journey by starting from somewhere other than where they are, so you need to be very clear about the reality of your current situation.

Awareness of yourself and your present situation will give you a good starting point for you to start setting clear, specific and actionable career goals that will move you forward from where you are right now.

First of all, write down some notes about yourself. What are your values? What do you enjoy doing? What are your skills? How would your friends describe you? What were you doing when you felt most fulfilled and happy? What qualifications do you have? Understand who you are and what is important to you.

Now project yourself forward to a year’s time, and then five years’ time. Where would you like to be? What kind of career can you see yourself in? Does it fill you with excitement and make you smile? If not, keep thinking.

You will know when you’ve hit on something. It’s what’s called that “gut feeling”. Now it’s time to start getting specific. Vague goals create vague results. The more specific you make your goals the more focussed you will be on your target and the closer you will get to that target.

Write down all the things you want in your new career. Where do you want to work? What kind of company will you work for? Will you work for yourself? What kind of office or work space? What kind of people will you meet? What will you be doing every day? Also, ask yourself WHY you want this particular career. What is it about it that would satisfy you?

Imagine the sights, sounds, smells and taste. Good writers always use all the senses to make their readers feel they are right in the scene. It’s the same with visualising your goal. You need to feel every detail, as well as just see it.

When you do this, your subconscious mind starts automatically looking for opportunities and creating ideas that move you forward to fulfilling your dream.

Now, write down a statement as if this career was already in place. Begin with “I am now…” and include all the details of your job: your job role, your income, the company you work for, where you work etc. Put this in a place where you can see it every day.

You will want to do some research now, and find out exactly what you need to do in order to get from where you are now to this statement you have just written down. You might need training or further work experience, or you might need to consider relocating.

Once you are clear about all the things you need to do, you can start writing your action plan. Write this out, step by step, working backwards from the goal so you can clearly see what needs to be done at each stage of your journey. Some of the larger steps, such as relocating, will need to broken down into smaller steps.

When you do this, you will have a realistic idea of how long it is going to take you to achieve your career goal. You can now add to your statement the date you will have achieved this. Once you have your plan of action, start working it!

Motivation and goal setting go hand in hand when you are planning a career change. Unless you choose a career goal that excites you, you will be likely to end up once again in a dissatisfying situation. You are the only person in charge of your life. Choose a great one!
